Converse Lucky Star Featuring Hendrik Altmeyer

In 1967 Converse introduced the Chuck Taylor Lucky Star for the first time as a stylized offering to the basketball community with refined textures and pronounced stitching, informed by the original All Star which existed as a performance Basketball Sneaker at that time.

Crafted with high-quality materials and defined by it’s distinct Lucky Star patch and retro „Chuck Taylor“ license plate the Lucky Star was dubbed as a performance sneaker worn on and off court.

Fast forward to 2018, where basketball culture is leading in creating (and breaking) style rules, the elusive Lucky Star sees a re-entry into the Converse line up. The Converse Lucky Star is available from December 8th in high cut or oxford, black or white and unisex sizing, on SNS.com.

To celebrate the comeback of the Lucky Star, we teamed up with Berlin based photographer Hendrik Altmeyer to document Denzel Curry’s Europe Tour, while giving the Lucky Star a test drive to see how the sneaker is performing on stage.

We met Hendrik last night at their show in Berlin and asked him about the tour, how he became the tour photographer of some of the biggest names in the Hip Hop industry and of course the Converse Chuck Taylor Lucky Star.

SNS: Hey Hendrik how are you doing man? Tell us about your day. Hendrik Altmeyer: My day is actually pretty chill. Usually we stay up till late, so we sleep almost through the day, especially because we’re on the road anyway. But once I’m up, I go through all the footage and photos and start editing them. And keep shooting. Once we get to the venue, we usually shower, get some food and start off with the soundcheck. After the soundcheck, me and Denzel work on some things for next year or we just shoot photos and I follow him around and film, whatever he does. He got a Meet & Greet 1 hour before the doors open, sometimes I film the M&G, but mostly I just edit photos from the day. As soon as IDK gets on stage, imma set up my camera and get ready for the show.

SNS: Sounds cool! How did it all started with Denzel, being from Germany and all.. HA: It all started with shooting parties my best friend Nico used to throw here in Berlin. The photos always came out super raw, because I never asked people for it. Then I got introduced to someone, who was working at splash! Mag back then. So I started shooting live shows for splash! Mag and happened to document a day in the life of The Underachievers, who took me on tour that night. I’m still friends with them. So Underachievers and Denzel Curry have the same booking agent, and I got introduced via mail through Underachievers’ Tour Manager. And I got to talk to Mark, Denzel’s Manager and he invited me to a Berlin show early 2016. And every time they were here, I got to hang out with them. During Denzel’s tour stop in Berlin last year, I shot a video and did the edit too, and then Mark hit me up and wanted me to be on the US Tour with Asap Ferg. This is how we came together and got to work closer. Now I’m his personal photographer/videographer. Got to live with him in LA, met more people and now we’re on the TA13OO World Tour. Finished US/Canada, right now on the European leg of the tour and gonna be in Australia in January.

SNS: This is crazy. So I guess your relationship feels more like a friendship than business gig? HA: We started as just hanging around the past 2 years, but being on the US tour and got to live with him changed this into a close friendship. We trust each other and yeah I’d say we’re pretty good friends now. So it’s more like I got to travel with my friends and see all those places with them and document it.

SNS: How’s the Europe Tour so far? HA: Europe has been crazy so far. We got IDK back on tour with us, who’s been opening the Asap Ferg tour earlier this year, so we already know each other. Like I said, it’s like traveling with your friends. But yeah, Europe tour is really dope, especially because I got to show everybody where I’m from and invited all my friends along. It’s really fun and I’m very grateful I get to do this and call it my job, even though it doesn’t feel like a job.

SNS: Nice! Feels like you're pretty busy. What’s coming up next for you? HA: The future looks pretty fun. I get to spend more time in LA and work with Denzel, like I said earlier, we are currently working on something for next year. I hope I get to travel as much as I do right now, and document Denzel’s life and show him in a very raw and personal way. Also working on a bigger documentary about him right now, which might comes out in 2019, I don’t know yet.

SNS: How does Converse fit in the picture? What’s your relationship with them? HA: I think Converse is a really good fit, first of all because I used to skate in Converse and also been on the road with some Hardcore and Punk bands for years, before I started photography. So I always was into Converse. Also I feel like Converse is the only brand you consider a shoe brand, made for touring and literally beat them shoes up. So they’re perfect for what I’m doing plus they always look fresh, no matter what you wear.

SNS: Last but not least – What do you think of the new Lucky Star after wearing it during the tour? HA: The Lucky Star is super comfortable. I rock the Hi-Top everyday on tour right now. The white looks clean and really nice on any fit. The shape is crazy! I really like the shape and the sole. Very different from the original ones. Imma rock them until they’re ripped off for sure!
