Jordan Brand x Paris Saint-Germain

Featuring Nithsaya

Parisian flagship football club Paris Saint-Germain and the iconic Jordan Brand, both influential to an entire generation, give an artful touch to their latest collaborative collection. Designed with a forward-thinking sportswear approach, the collection playfully combines both stories, football, and basketball in one drop. The spring / summer '19 collection previewed here (certain items are releasing alongside the Air Jordan VI later this summer) full of stylish lifestyle items such as shirts, hoodies, sweat pants, tees, caps, and shorts, sits right at the heart of the intersection of fashion and sport. In fact, to add some spice to the creative juice, Sneakersnstuff and Hypebeast France engage in a conversation with Parisian Nithsaya, known for his love for PSG and customizing jerseys, while connecting over a stroll through Paris.

HYPEBEAST FRANCE: As a fan of PSG, what do you think of the new collaboration between Jordan x PSG? Nithsaya: I think it's hot. From a marketing point of view already, because it is a strength for both brands, for PSG and Jordan Brand. It's a crossover that is very interesting, even at the creative level. When the first collab came out, I asked myself the question, because Jordan has imagery closely related to basketball and PSG remains a football club. For a crossover of brands and disciplines, I find that the collab is quite successful.

HYPEBEAST FRANCE: And from a design point of view? Nithsaya: I like the color codes. It is well branded, because we see as much the Paris Saint-Germain side as the Jordan side. I do not find that one entity erases the other.

HYPEBEAST FRANCE: How has this collab changed the industry since its arrival last year? Nithsaya: The first time I saw the collaboration was last year during the Champions League. The players arrived with a white jersey, like Real Madrid. At the image level, it was very impacting, as the black jersey, in a samurai way, which gives it a warrior feeling actually. The dark pieces remind me of the Mortal Kombat game.

HYPEBEAST FRANCE: Some fans were a bit skeptical about the collaboration when it was announced. Now, a year later, the association seems well installed. Nithsaya: At first, I was not skeptical; I was somewhat impatient. Then they managed to impose it in the collective unconscious.

HYPEBEAST FRANCE: Travis Scott teased the basketball jersey last year, this year it was DJ Khaled who teased the pair of Air Jordan 6 ... How did PSG move into this new dimension? Nithsaya: I think we are in a new era. PSG has become a powerful brand when you see Travis Scott tease the collection, or Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner are in the VIP stand, or even the co-sign of Beckham. We have the feeling that in Paris today, everything is possible. The mentality has changed here; it is more global, mainly thanks to the Internet; everything goes very fast.

HYPEBEAST FRANCE: With this globalization, has PSG lost a little flavor? Is it still your PSG? Nithsaya: It will always be my Paris Saint-Germain, that's for sure. It is true that since the Leproux plan and the withdrawal of the kops, it has removed a little spice, but it is part of the evolution. If you want to compete with big clubs like Real Madrid or Liverpool, you have to play in the same league. To sit at their table, it is necessary to make it a reality.

There will always be this eternal debate between authenticity and evolution. One does not prevent the other. I think of the FC Barcelona who managed to keep a family DNA. Paris has a marketing approach closer to Real Madrid (Zidane, Figo, Beckham) and I find this wise and an intelligent choice. To reunite Neymar and Mbappé in the same jersey, that's a strong move.

HYPEBEAST FRANCE: Do Parisians finally have the club they deserve? Nithsaya: This is the city of light. There is pride. I have always been proud to be Parisian, but seeing all this investment is a kind of recognition.

*HYPEBEAST FRANCE: Is PSG the coolest club in the world? * Nithsaya: I think, yes. With this collaboration, they managed to combine the glamor of Paris with the way of living that is unique to the city. When we are looking for excellence in a field, we always think of Paris at a given moment. With this collab, they also made it in a very harmonious way.

HYPEBEAST FRANCE: Regarding your creative Golden Cabane studio, what are you doing exactly? Nithsaya: I do two things. On the one hand, vintage jerseys customized in unique pieces. I revisit them and bring them up to date. On the other hand, I also do limited edition merch, always focused on football in 10 to 25 copies.

HYPEBEAST FRANCE: You have revisited a vintage PSG jersey, how did you come up with this idea? Nithsaya: I have a very organic approach to things. It is undoubtedly a particularity of creatives, to be able to connect the dots. I've always been trend-oriented, I've always sourced, I'm an archivist and librarian when it comes to trend, and I always liked to imagine the next step and say "how this piece will evolve, that will happen in two or three years." After a search on the Internet, I came across a vintage PSG jersey, the best year in the Champions League for us, and something jumped to my eyes. I have always customized, whether with Air Forces or apparel, I always liked unique pieces. I did some tests, I published my work on Instagram, and I had a strong response if it would be produced, so I made a limited series for my loved ones.

HYPEBEAST FRANCE: Some well-known people have made requests for a jersey from you? Nithsaya: Yes, I had some requests from personalities like DJ Snake, a big fan of PSG, which is also very nice.

HYPEBEAST FRANCE: How did you go about getting these authentic vintage jerseys? Nithsaya: I used a contact who works in the business and who recovers vintage pieces for a few years.

HYPEBEAST FRANCE: Some pieces are a mix of vintage influences and modern designs. What would be your version of the Jordan x PSG collab? Nithsaya: It would be a little different, a little more "creative." I would not hesitate to use number 45 of Michael Jordan, after his little excursion to baseball. Although the 23 is iconic, the 45 has a side "I'm back" as Zizou when he returned in 2005 with Makélélé and Thuram (laughs). There is a powerful side in the 45. I would not have hesitated either to make a jersey in the colors of PSG or even a basketball jersey stamped Mbappé, I would find it crazy.

HYPEBEAST FRANCE: Kylian Mbappé represents this collab, be it at the level of lifestyle, generational or sports. Nithsaya: It's not the same sport, but Mbappé makes me think a lot about Jordan. He is a new genius. Jordan, when he was drafted, was the same, a prodigy. We have a prodigy every ten years; there was Platini, Zidane and I have the impression that it is Mbappé.

HYPEBEAST FRANCE: We see plenty of kids rocking the sneaker in Paris when they may not know who Michael Jordan was. How was this connection with the Parisian youth created? Nithsaya: I think Jordan was part of a 1980/90 era that marked the big brothers or the parents of these young people. I got into the basketball culture thanks to my 80's cousin via his Ewing, Barkley, or Jordan posters. Culture and passion were passed on by the elders.

HYPEBEAST FRANCE: What do you think of this evolution? Nithsaya: Those who saw Jordan play basketball do not understand everything, but generations evolve, and it is great that the youth takes on these codes.

HYPEBEAST FRANCE: Conversely, is football now part of the streetwear culture? Nithsaya: Yes, and it has always been part of the street culture anyway. It's played in the street, with a ball and a few friends. We do not need anything more.

HYPEBEAST FRANCE: You can feel this influence in fashion more and more Nithsaya: Football has become cool. And even beyond football, many things have changed in France. We have been very segmented for a long time, especially in Paris. If I have to make the parallel with fashion or even rap, today many artists are regional. Before it was too difficult when one did not come from the capital or the Île-de-France. There were big cities like Marseille, Lyon and especially Paris. When I see Gradur and Niro, I think at another time they would not have been this famous. Now it's regionality as Jacquemus in fashion, which makes it a force. There is less conformity, we are no longer tracing the codes, and each one cultivates its singularity.

HYPEBEAST FRANCE: Street culture has exploded totally in Paris since a few years, especially with the opening of shops like SNS, what is your view of this evolution? Nithsaya: I remember a highly codified Paris before the Instagram era. It was very rare to see even running sneaker at the feet of people, that is something I saw in New York for the first time in a very casual style. And everything was uninhibited. We have a very elitist side here, very "chic" and with the Internet, we can draw inspiration from everywhere.

HYPEBEAST FRANCE: Whether in rap or other areas, what was considered counterculture ten years ago, is still a little today for some areas, but it has mostly "popped." Nithsaya: For those who are from the suburbs, what is your vision of the punchline of Medina "the suburb influences Paname, Paname influences the world"?

*HYPEBEAST FRANCE: I would take that in an even broader sense. I would say, "suburbs influence capitals and capitals influence the world." There has always been a cool thing about the suburbs, but when you live in it it's part of your lifestyle, you do not care. But when I take the example of the TN today that is worn by all social strata, I find it beautiful.

What are your next projects?* Nithsaya: The development of Golden Cabane. I'm thinking of my own jersey collection. Not for now but I think about it. I also have music coming up with an EP in preparation. Golden Cabane is like a showcase; it's a mood board.
